Develops where limestone lies at or near the surface. Soluble in water, easily erodible, forming irregular, sometimes jagged topography when exposed above sea level. Landforms include pinnacles and towers, caves, sinkholes and springs.
'Karst', derived from Kras region of Slovenia, changed to Karst in German.
